Kitchens in Montrose

We bet you are dying to rip your current kitchen apart.

Whether it is a kitchen you have inherited through a move and the layout is all wrong, or that it is starting to look tired from years of use. The frustration of it can become overwhelming as we spend so much time in this room.

Whether you are a chef extraordinaire or more accustomed to using the microwave; kitchens are more than just cooking areas, they are the heart of the house. This is why it is important to find out a bit about you before starting the design process. There’s no point adopting a pretty magazine picture if it is not going to work for you functionally.

Kitchen Considerations

There’s no getting away from it, remodelling a kitchen requires a lot of decisions. However, both Veronica and Mark aim to make these as easy as possible for you by guiding you through the process in bitesize chunks.

Questions to think about before the design process starts:

How do you want to use the kitchen space?

For cooking and entertaining with friends or just a functional space.

How many people are likely to be in the space at any one time?

Nobody likes a cramped kitchen!

Do you like the idea of an island in your kitchen?

Think about whether you would like to cook at it or just use it as a breakfast bar

Do you like to bake?

Large, flat and clean surfaces are ideal if you’re an avid baker – less nooks and crannies for flour to settle in!

Do you eat more fresh or packaged meals?

Storage space for ingredients as well as counter space will be factors to consider

Should countertop appliances, cooking equipment or dishes be hidden or on show?

Consider what you’d like to display or what items you use every day

What do you love or hate in kitchens that you’ve seen?

Pan drawers, instant boiling water taps, wine chillers, handleless designs, and integrated coffee machines. The options are endless!

How much do you want to spend?

Have a reasonable budget in mind to suit your needs, and decide what are the non-negotiables from the list above!

Cabinets & Interiors

All of our German kitchens are manufactured to the highest quality, with a reputation built on their durability over time.

As with most German manufacturing the cabinets are assembled in Germany along with their interiors and then delivered directly to your home, this allows them to be built with stronger rigidity than flat pack assemblies.

Cabinet carcusses are available in lots of different sizes and your designer will help you best fit these to your kitchen layout as it will involve a combination of different styles.

Base units come with a depth of 600mm and wall units typically 350mm, width can vary from 300mm to 1200mm with countertop height traditionally being 720mm although variances are available and useful, especially for the taller customer!

Cupboard interiors are when you can really take kitchen design to the next level.

The real aim is to maximise your storage opportunities while making your life as easy as possible. Spice drawers, recycling, waste removal, pull outs, towel racks, tray storage, carousels and lots more.

There is an encyclopedia worth of options to discover!

Self propelled mechanisms such as carousels and the kidney shaped ‘le-mans’ unit are great, however there is also great technology available such as the magic corner.

Corners in a kitchen used to be dead-space however, now there are lots of options to consider that allow you to make the most of the space available.

The magic corner uses the opening movement from the door to bring the front section of the unit out, while the hidden back section also moves forward for optimal access to the whole cupboard’s contents.

To view a selection of options pop into our kitchen studio or arrange an appointment with one of our designers.

Cabinet doors & handles

Gloss or matt doors, bold or neutral colours – we have a huge range available for you to choose from allowing you to bring either a more traditional or contemporary style to your culinary area.

Handleless kitchens have recently become more popular due to their sleek and sophisticated appearance.

Known in the past for the j-pull, the handless design has had a makeover in German design making use of a channel machined into the base carcass.

The door is then opened by placing your hand behind the top edge of the door or drawer and pulling it outwards. We have these on show in our Montrose Kitchen studio along with a selection of other handled styles.

Countertops & Splashbacks

Are you drawn to a skinny or chunky finish for your kitchen worktops?

The kitchen worktop is possibly the most important feature to master in your design process as it not only captures so much visual property but also has to stand up to everyday contact with potentially damaging substances and equipment.

In many situations this is not only food preparation, but also socialising, paperwork and homework.

Careful consideration needs to be made to the worktops size, durability, strength and care requirements.

Read our blog article: Kitchen worktops, which one is the best?

We have a huge offering of countertops to choose from:

  • Corian
  • Dekton
  • Granite
  • Apollo Quartz
  • Silestone
  • Laminate
  • Solid Wood

The best way to browse our selection is to pop in to our kitchen showroom in Montrose.

Splashbacks & upfronts

Kitchens in Montrose sink and tap

To create a more seamless appearance, you may choose to use the same materials in your worktops to create upfronts, however you will still want something more substantial in size around your heavy duty cooking areas.

As well as playing a practical role of protecting our walls from hobs and sinks, splashbacks can now also play a statement piece in bringing your room together. As well as worktops it is one of the first things you are likely to notice when walking into a kitchen.

Be adventurous and opt for a patterned or photographic vinyl behind toughened glass. Introduce a bold colour amongst neutral cabinets using acrylic or glass. Alternatively consider something more classic such as wall tiles, marble, granite or exposed brick. Take a look through Pinterest or magazines and get a feel for what you like or dislike.

When browsing all the sink options available for your kitchen, you should carefully select it alongside your worktop selection.

First off there are three distinct sink mounting options; undermount, drop-in and apron front.

Undermount sinks are great when you are using solid surface materials such as Granite, Apollo Quartz or Dekton, they give a seamless appearance, with an integrated worktop drying rack.

Drop-in sinks have a visible lip around their perimeter that rests on top of the countertop, they are extremely easy to clean and are available to use on any worktop material.

Finally, the apron fronted sink also known as a farmhouse sink, allows the user to stand in front without any cabinets or worktop in-between. Installed just under the level of the countertop, it makes wiping water spray or debris into the sink easy.

Other features to consider are:

  • What material to use?
e.g. porcelain, granite, corian, stainless steel
  • Size and composition of the sink?
e.g. single deep basin, 60/40 twin bowl, a 50/50 double bowl
  • Whether you’d like the drainer integrated into the worktop and which side of the sink to install it.

Devices & Appliances

A good place to start is to list out all the appliances that you want in your kitchen design.

Most normal kitchens will contain at least a hob, extractor fan, cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and perhaps a microwave.

In addition to this there may be a few desirables to keep in mind such as a wine cooler, coffee machine, tumble drier and a boiling water tap.

The trick is to get short-listing! What do you like? Touch screen or physical button, integrated or freestanding? Induction, gas or electric?

The initial design will also be able to help as it will outline size requirements, which may only be available in certain appliances.

It is also worth noting do you have any existing appliances that you’d like to keep?

As part of kitchen design process we recommend Neff, Siemens and Hotpoint to offer you the perfect balance of design and innovative technology.

However, you are welcome to go out with this selection, just let us know the product details so that we can add it to the design.
